Wike Not APC Member but Key to FCT Electoral Victory, Says Basiru

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has clarified that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is not a member of the ruling party, but is serving under an APC-led administration headed by President Bola Tinubu.

Basiru made the clarification while addressing public discussions surrounding Wike’s political affiliation and his role in the current administration.

Speaking during an appearance on Beyond The Headlines, Basiru said Wike’s performance as FCT Minister has enhanced the image of the APC government within the territory. He linked the party’s recent victory in the FCT local government elections to the extensive infrastructural development carried out under Wike’s leadership.

According to him, the visible transformation across Abuja and its surrounding communities played a significant role in boosting voter confidence in the ruling party. He noted that development efforts were not confined to the city centre but extended to suburban and previously underserved areas.

Basiru described Wike’s performance as “sterling,” adding that it reflects positively on the Tinubu administration. He also credited the party’s internal strategies for contributing to its electoral success.

The APC scribe explained that the party prioritised grassroots engagement and fielded candidates with credible political track records, including individuals from diverse political backgrounds. This approach, combined with infrastructure delivery, he said, made the APC more appealing to voters in the FCT.

He emphasised that the achievements of the current FCT administration cannot be separated from the outcome of the elections, noting that effective governance and political success are closely linked when citizens can see tangible results.

“Wike is not a member of our party, but he works for an APC government headed by Tinubu,” Basiru said.

“When you look at the massive infrastructural development in the FCT—not only in urban areas but also in the suburbs over the past two and a half years—you will see that the sterling performance of the FCT Minister, along with our party’s engagement efforts and careful selection of candidates with strong political backgrounds, contributed significantly to the APC’s victory in the FCT local government elections.

“You cannot separate the effective delivery of the dividends of democracy in the FCT under the present administration from the success of our party in that election.”
