Femi Otedola Publicly Honors Gilbert Chagoury as His Mentor

Nigerian billionaire investor and philanthropist Femi Otedola has publicly named Sir. Gilbert Chagoury as his mentor, describing the 80-year-old business magnate and philanthropist as a key influence on his life and career.  Otedola’s tribute highlights the enduring impact of Chagoury’s vision, discipline and commitment to nation-building on Nigeria’s landscape and its business community.

The heartfelt homage was shared by Otedola on X (formerly Twitter) in celebration of Chagoury’s 80th birthday. In his message, Otedola lauded the role model as a personal and professional inspiration, whose contributions to urban development have helped shape some of Nigeria’s most iconic landmarks.

“Happy 80th birthday to my mentor, my role model, Sir Gilbert Chagoury,” Otedola wrote. “At 80, your life stands as proof that vision, discipline, and an unwavering belief in Nigeria can truly shape history.”

such as Banana Island — the ultra-luxury residential enclave in Lagos — and the ambitious Eko Atlantic urban development initiative as testaments to his extraordinary foresight. He described Eko Atlantic, a large-scale land reclamation and commercial hub project, as the “9th wonder of the modern world,” praising its role in protecting coastal areas of Victoria Island and Ikoyi while expanding economic opportunities.

“Without your vision, there would be no Banana Island — a bold idea that redefined what urban development could look like in Nigeria,” Otedola said. “And without the courage and persistence behind Eko Atlantic, much of Victoria Island and Ikoyi might today be at the mercy of the Atlantic Ocean.”

Beyond infrastructure, Otedola praised Chagoury’s unwavering passion for Nigeria, noting that even after decades of achievement, his commitment to the country’s progress has remained strong. He described this consistency of purpose as the “greatest legacy” of Chagoury’s life and work, expressing admiration for his enduring dedication to improving the nation through enterprise and philanthropy.

Sir Gilbert Chagoury, a Nigerian-Lebanese industrialist, co-founded the Chagoury Group in 1971 with his brother Ronald. The conglomerate has since become a major player in sectors including construction, real estate, manufacturing, hospitality, and telecommunications, and has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economic and social development.

In his tribute, Otedola also thanked Chagoury for serving as a guiding figure in his own entrepreneurial journey. While Otedola is widely recognised for his leadership of First HoldCo Plc and Geregu Power Plc — and for high-profile investments across the financial and energy sectors — he attributed much of his inspiration to lessons learned from Chagoury’s example of bold thinking and visionary execution.

The public acknowledgment of Chagoury as a mentor underscores the deep respect and admiration that Otedola — one of Nigeria’s most influential business leaders — holds for his senior peer. It also highlights the importance of mentorship and legacy within the country’s business elite, where seasoned investors and industrialists often shape the next generation of leaders through guidance, example and sustained engagement with national development priorities.

As Chagoury celebrates his 80th milestone, Otedola’s tribute stands as a testament to the transformative impact of visionary leadership and the enduring value of intergenerational mentorship in fostering innovation and progress in Nigeria.
