Arewa Leaders Say They Will Not Endorse 2027 Presidential Candidate

Prominent Arewa leaders have announced that they will not endorse any presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing their commitment to neutrality and urging political actors to focus on national unity rather than sectional interests. The leaders made the position known during a meeting in Kaduna, highlighting the importance of allowing citizens to make independent choices at the polls.

According to the statement issued after the meeting, Arewa leaders affirmed that their role is to guide and advise the region on matters of public interest without aligning with any political party or individual. They underscored the need to prioritize national development, stability, and inclusivity over partisan politics.

The leaders warned that premature endorsements could deepen divisions and create unnecessary tension within the North, which they described as a diverse and politically complex region. They urged politicians to engage in issue-based campaigns that address the socioeconomic challenges facing Nigerians, rather than relying on ethnic or regional loyalties to secure votes.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that the voices of our people are heard and respected, not to impose political choices,” a senior Arewa leader stated. “We will not tell anyone whom to vote for, and we expect political parties to respect the autonomy of our citizens.”

Political analysts believe the announcement reflects growing recognition among Northern leaders of the need to project neutrality in national elections. They note that previous endorsements have sometimes sparked controversy and contributed to heightened tensions during elections, undermining both regional cohesion and national unity.

The Arewa leaders also emphasized the importance of internal reforms within political parties, urging candidates to present clear policy proposals and demonstrate commitment to good governance. They stressed that leadership should be evaluated based on competence, integrity, and the ability to deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians, rather than regional or ethnic considerations.

Observers suggest that the leaders’ stance could influence voter behaviour in the North, as citizens may now feel freer to make independent electoral choices without pressure from traditional authorities. The position also signals a shift in the role of regional leaders in the political process, highlighting the growing demand for issue-based politics.

The statement comes at a time when political parties are intensifying preparations for the 2027 elections, including candidate selection, coalition-building, and grassroots mobilisation. Analysts predict that the Arewa leaders’ neutrality could impact early political negotiations, particularly in key Northern states where regional influence has historically been significant.

By opting not to endorse any candidate, Arewa leaders aim to foster inclusivity, encourage democratic participation, and reduce the risk of sectionalism in upcoming elections. Their decision underscores the importance of allowing Nigerians to exercise their voting rights freely while promoting national cohesion.
