Lagos Hospital Withholds Mother’s Body Over Charges

Lagos — A woman has taken to social media in tears, appealing for help after Awesome Hospital, Surulere, allegedly demanded an additional ₦1 million before allowing her to claim her late mother’s corpse.

In a viral video, the woman recounted the ordeal, saying she admitted her mother to Awesome Hospital when she became seriously ill. The hospital reportedly required an upfront deposit of ₦1.5 million before commencing treatment. She said she complied, paying the sum in installments, which covered oxygen, blood transfusion, nursing care, utilities, and various investigations.

Tragically, her mother passed away less than 24 hours after admission. When she attempted to take her mother’s body, the hospital reportedly demanded an additional ₦1 million before releasing the corpse.

“I have already paid 1.5 million naira. My mother is dead, and now they are asking me to pay more to take her body,” the woman said, visibly distressed in the video. She further explained that her brother, a medical doctor, intervened and raised concerns over overcharging. For instance, she claimed the hospital charged ₦50,000 for blood that should cost ₦25,000 according to her brother.

The woman’s viral video has since attracted widespread attention, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the hospital’s alleged actions, calling it both unethical and insensitive.
