The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has disclosed that the contributions of Corps Members deployed to Lagos State are valued at more than ₦14 billion annually, underscoring the programmer’s immense economic and social impact.
NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made this known during a courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Government House, Marina. He explained that this valuation reflects the services rendered by over 44,000 Corps Members currently deployed to the state across critical sectors.
According to him, Lagos remains the top destination for Corps Members because of its relative safety, opportunities for professional development, and the confidence parents have in the state. “NYSC provides services for the government and people of Lagos State worth over ₦14 billion annually,” Nafiu said.
Corps Members in Key Sectors
Breaking down the deployment, the DG revealed that 333 doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and more than 7,000 teachers are among those contributing directly to the health and education systems. Others serve in public administration, environmental management, and private sector roles, thereby strengthening the state’s workforce at minimal cost to government.
Nafiu stressed that this support has become indispensable in bridging manpower gaps. He assured that NYSC will continue to send adequate numbers of graduates to Lagos to sustain and expand these contributions.
Lagos as Preferred Posting Destination
Acknowledging the governor’s backing, the DG commended the Lagos State Government for ongoing renovation works at the temporary orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja, as well as for embarking on the construction of a 10,000-capacity permanent orientation camp in Agbowa, Ikorodu.
He noted that once completed, the new site will eliminate the current practice of relocating some Corps Members to neighbouring states due to limited facilities. “The Scheme looks forward to when the camp will be completed so that Corps Members deployed to Lagos will camp in the same location,” he stated.
Nafiu also appealed to the governor for additional support, including the provision of an ambulance for the Lagos NYSC Secretariat and continued logistical assistance.
Lagos Government’s Commitment
Governor Sanwo-Olu, in response, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development and capacity building. He disclosed that the state has already committed over ₦5 billion to the permanent camp project, which began in January 2025. The facility is expected to be delivered within the stipulated timeframe to meet global standards.
The governor further revealed that the minimum wage for Corps Members working directly under state institutions has been reviewed upward to reflect prevailing economic realities. This move complements the Federal Government’s recent increase of the NYSC monthly allowance to ₦77,000, up from ₦33,000, following the approval of a new national minimum wage.
Strengthening National Development
Nafiu emphasized that the NYSC remains one of Nigeria’s most enduring nation-building initiatives, not only fostering unity but also producing measurable economic impact. He praised Corps Members for their dedication and resilience despite national challenges.
“With the continuous support of state governments, particularly Lagos, NYSC will keep serving as a catalyst for human capital development and national integration,” he added.
