The headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), located in Abuja’s Central Business District, was shut down on Wednesday morning following a peaceful but determined protest.
Dozens of demonstrators, identified as members of a coalition of Niger Delta youth, stormed the NNPCL Towers carrying placards with messages such as “NNPCL Must End Corruption,” “Bayo Ojulari Must Go,” and “Transparency is Non-Negotiable.” Their primary demand is the removal of Bashir Bayo Ojulari, the Group Chief Executive Officer, whom they accused of corruption and mismanagement.
The protest brought all activities at the NNPCL headquarters to a halt. Workers and visitors were denied access, with many staff members left stranded outside as security personnel locked entry points to prevent escalation.
Chanting solidarity songs, the protesters alleged that corruption, inefficiency, and lack of accountability continue to plague NNPCL, even after its transition to a commercial entity. They warned that without urgent reforms, the petroleum sector will continue to face scandals and poor service delivery.
Security operatives, including police officers and private guards, monitored the demonstration, which remained peaceful with no reports of violence or property damage.
