Sebastien Haller has finalized a full-time switch to Dutch side Utrecht, Borussia Dortmund announced Monday.
The 31-year-old forward completed the move without a transfer fee after the German club agreed to end his contract a year ahead of schedule.
The Ivory Coast international spent the latter portion of last season on loan at Utrecht, where he had previously played from 2015 to 2017.
“This summer there was quite a bit of interest from other clubs, but for me there was only one ideal scenario and that was FC Utrecht,” Haller said in a statement on the club’s website.
This transfer closes a challenging spell in Haller’s career at Dortmund.
After joining from Ajax in 2022 for €31 million ($36 million), he was diagnosed with testicular cancer shortly afterward, forcing him to sit out six months for treatment.
He also failed to convert a penalty on the final day of the 2022-23 campaign in a 2-2 draw at home against Mainz, a result that handed Bayern Munich the Bundesliga trophy.
Having previously played for West Ham and Eintracht Frankfurt, the striker scored the winning goal for Ivory Coast in last year’s Africa Cup of Nations final versus Nigeria.
