The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has donated 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on CNG, reaffirming its support for the Federal Government’s push towards cleaner, more affordable energy alternatives.
The handover ceremony took place on Monday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, with the Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, highlighting the company’s role in Nigeria’s energy transition.
“This initiative is part of our commitment to promote CNG as a cleaner, cheaper, and sustainable alternative to petrol,” Ojulari said. He noted that NNPC has made notable progress in gas infrastructure, supply, and distribution.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, praised the donation, describing the buses as “symbols of economic relief, social equity, and environmental responsibility.” He said the effort aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at cutting transport costs and reducing petrol dependency.
Also speaking, NNPC’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, emphasized the economic impact of shifting to CNG, stating it will reduce reliance on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), leading to cost savings and local gas industry growth.
Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, added that the initiative showcases NNPC’s dedication to shaping a sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Coordinator/CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, lauded NNPC as a consistent and vital partner since the program’s inception.
