Edo APC Chairman Faces Scrutiny Over AK-47 Election Threat

The Edo State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarrett Tenebe, has come under renewed scrutiny following remarks attributed to him threatening the use of an AK-47 against anyone who obstructs efforts to secure votes for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The remarks, which circulated in a video, have raised concerns about political rhetoric and the safety of opposition supporters as parties prepare for the next election cycle.

Tenebe was quoted as saying that anyone who attempted to stand in the way of votes intended for Tinubu would face the threat of an AK-47. His comments have drawn attention to concerns about the use of threatening language by political figures during election campaigns.

The controversy was discussed in an opinion article published by Peoples Gazette on October 12, 2026, authored by human rights lawyer Abdul Mahmud. The writer argued that threats involving firearms have no place in democratic competition and called for political leaders and security agencies to protect voters regardless of their political affiliations.

The article also raised concerns about reports of opposition activists being detained in Maiduguri and alleged attacks on supporters of Peter Obi in Delta State. Those incidents form part of the wider debate over political freedom and the safety of campaigners ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political competition in a democracy is expected to be based on persuasion, party programmes and the ability to win public support through lawful means. Threats of violence, if substantiated, can undermine voters’ confidence in their ability to participate freely.

The controversy also highlights the responsibility of political parties to ensure that their officials conduct themselves in a manner consistent with democratic principles and the law.

Under Nigeria’s constitutional framework, citizens have the right to participate in political activities and make electoral choices without intimidation. The freedom to support or oppose a candidate is central to the credibility of an election.

The remarks attributed to Tenebe have therefore renewed calls for political leaders to avoid language that could be interpreted as encouraging violence against opponents or voters.

However, the reported statement should be considered in its full context, and any potential criminal or disciplinary consequences would depend on the relevant evidence and assessment by the appropriate authorities.

As political activities gather momentum ahead of 2027, the handling of inflammatory campaign statements is likely to remain an important issue for parties, security agencies and electoral stakeholders.

The central question is whether political leaders can conduct their campaigns in a manner that protects citizens’ rights and allows voters to make their choices freely, without fear of violence or intimidation.
