The Kano State Government has called on politicians from northern Nigeria seeking the presidency to shelve their ambitions until 2031, arguing that the North should allow President Bola Tinubu to complete his tenure.
The position was contained in a statement attributed to the state government amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The government argued that allowing the current administration to complete its tenure would promote political stability and provide room for the implementation of ongoing programmes.
The call comes as political parties and opposition groups continue to mobilise ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Several northern politicians have already indicated interest in the 2027 presidential contest, while different political platforms are working to consolidate their structures across the country.
The Kano Government’s position has therefore added another dimension to the debate over zoning, rotation and regional representation ahead of the next presidential election.
The issue of regional rotation has remained a recurring subject in Nigerian politics, with political parties and individual politicians holding different positions on whether presidential power should rotate among the country’s geopolitical regions.
Meanwhile, political activities in Kano have intensified ahead of the 2027 governorship election. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has been adopted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as its governorship candidate for the election.
The state’s political landscape has also witnessed significant realignments, including Yusuf’s movement from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC and his subsequent emergence as the ruling party’s candidate.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has listed Yusuf among the candidates for the 2027 Kano governorship election.
Against this background, the Kano Government’s appeal for northern presidential aspirants to wait until 2031 is likely to remain part of discussions surrounding the region’s political strategy ahead of 2027.
The call, however, represents the position of the Kano State Government and does not prevent individual politicians or political parties from pursuing their constitutional and electoral ambitions.
As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, debates over zoning, regional interests, party alliances and presidential succession are expected to remain prominent across the country.
