The wife of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dr Nonye Soludo, has clarified the nature of the godparent relationship between her family and that of former Anambra governor Peter Obi.
The clarification followed a viral video in which Obi said that he and his wife, Margaret, were godparents to Soludo’s children. Obi made the remark on Friday at the 22nd Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu, while dismissing suggestions of a personal disagreement between him and Soludo.
Following the circulation of the video, the office of the Anambra First Lady said it received several enquiries from members of the public seeking clarification about the relationship between the two families.
In a statement issued by her media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe, Nonye Soludo said the impression created by Obi’s statement was inaccurate.
According to the clarification, Peter Obi is not the godfather of any of Soludo’s children.
The statement explained that Nonye Soludo serves as the confirmation godmother to one of Peter Obi’s daughters, while Margaret Obi, wife of the former governor, is the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters.
The statement further clarified that neither Peter Obi nor Chukwuma Soludo has served as a godparent to the other’s children.
The First Lady’s media aide suggested that Obi may have misspoken while making the remarks, noting that the clarification became necessary because the video had circulated widely and generated questions.
The statement also stressed that the relationship between the two families remains cordial, despite the political and policy disagreements that have recently attracted public attention.
Obi had earlier said there was no personal quarrel between him and Soludo, describing the Anambra governor as someone with whom he maintains a close relationship.
The clarification comes amid renewed public discussion over disagreements between Obi and the Soludo administration, particularly concerning the financial position of Anambra State and claims relating to the former governor’s record in office.
However, the First Lady’s statement focused specifically on the godparent relationship and did not address the wider political disagreements between the two men.
The development has provided clarification on the family connection between the former and current Anambra governors, while both sides have maintained that political differences should not necessarily be interpreted as a personal conflict.
