The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has pledged to take a leading role in the party’s campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, with a focus on securing support for candidates contesting under the party’s platform.
The resolution was reached during the APC’s National Strategic Retreat in Maiduguri, Borno State, where the party’s NWC also held its 195th meeting. The development comes as differences persist between some APC governors and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his political coalition ahead of the elections.
The APC Governors’ Forum has maintained that its members will support candidates officially sponsored by the ruling party. The position contrasts with Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, which the minister has described as a platform aimed at mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election while allowing other political parties to field candidates in governorship and legislative contests.
The NWC, meanwhile, passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima and other APC candidates preparing for the 2027 elections.
The party leadership also emphasised the need for reconciliation within its ranks, resolving to address disagreements among members and leaders at the state, local government and ward levels.
The move is part of efforts to strengthen the party’s internal structure and electoral preparedness ahead of the next general elections.
The disagreement with Wike has intensified in recent days, with APC governors insisting that political arrangements should not undermine the party’s candidates. Wike, on his part, has continued to defend his support for Tinubu while maintaining that other political parties should remain free to contest elections at the state and legislative levels.
At the Maiduguri retreat, attended by APC state chairmen and other stakeholders from across the country, the party adopted the theme, “Strengthening Party Organisation, Unity and Electoral Readiness Towards 2027.”
The latest resolution signals the NWC’s intention to coordinate its structures and campaign activities more closely as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
