2027: Wike Says He Won’t Help Politicians Win State Elections

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will not support politicians seeking to win elections in their respective states ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike made the declaration while speaking on the growing political alignments and disagreements among politicians preparing for the next election cycle.

The minister said his political support would not automatically extend to individuals simply because they are seeking electoral victories in their home states.

His position comes amid increasing political manoeuvring ahead of 2027, with politicians and political groups across the country forming alliances and reviewing their strategies ahead of the elections.

Wike has remained a prominent figure in the political realignment surrounding the 2027 presidential election. Although he is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the former Rivers State governor has openly expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He has also maintained that his support for Tinubu does not mean he will abandon his personal political interests or relationships with politicians in other parties.

The minister had previously dismissed speculation that he needed an official role in the All Progressives Congress campaign structure to contribute to Tinubu’s re-election effort. He said he could work towards the president’s victory without occupying a formal campaign position.

Wike’s latest comments are likely to attract attention among politicians who are already positioning themselves for various elective offices in 2027.

The former Rivers governor has been at the centre of several political controversies since the 2023 elections, particularly following his appointment as FCT minister and his decision to remain within the PDP while supporting Tinubu.

His political stance has also contributed to debates within the opposition regarding alliances, loyalty and the possibility of a broader coalition ahead of the next presidential election.

Meanwhile, political parties and aspirants have intensified consultations as preparations for 2027 gather momentum. Several opposition figures are seeking to build a platform capable of challenging the ruling APC, while Tinubu’s supporters are working to consolidate the president’s political base.

Wike’s latest statement highlights the increasingly complex nature of political alliances ahead of the elections, where national alliances do not necessarily translate into support for candidates at the state level.

With the 2027 elections approaching, political actors are expected to continue negotiating alliances and deciding which candidates to support across different levels of government.

Wike’s declaration therefore signals that his political support may be determined on a case-by-case basis rather than extended automatically to politicians seeking electoral victories in their respective states.
