APC Primary Fallout: Desmond Elliot Apologises to Gbajabiamila

Lagos State House of Assembly member Desmond Elliot has apologised to Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, following a disagreement linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election.

Elliot reportedly went on his knees while seeking forgiveness from Gbajabiamila during a meeting in Lagos, expressing regret over his actions and asking his political mentor to pardon him.

The development comes after a political disagreement between the lawmaker and Gbajabiamila, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and prominent APC figure in Lagos.

In a video of the encounter circulated on social media, Elliot was seen apologising to Gbajabiamila and acknowledging that his actions during the party’s primary process had caused tension between them.

The lawmaker appealed for reconciliation and indicated his desire to restore his relationship with the former Speaker.

Gbajabiamila, who previously represented Surulere Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has remained an influential political figure in Lagos politics and currently serves as Tinubu’s Chief of Staff.

Elliot, who represents Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has also maintained a longstanding political association with Gbajabiamila.

The disagreement reportedly arose from developments surrounding the APC primary election and the political interests of various aspirants in Surulere.

Elliot’s decision to publicly apologise is being viewed as an attempt to resolve the disagreement and repair the relationship ahead of the 2027 political season.

The lawmaker’s political career has been closely associated with Surulere, where he has represented the constituency in the Lagos Assembly since 2015. He first won election to the Assembly under the APC after leaving a career in Nollywood.

The latest development comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians across the country working to strengthen party structures and secure nominations.

The APC is expected to face increased competition for elective positions as aspirants begin positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle.

For Elliot, the reconciliation with Gbajabiamila could help ease tensions within the party’s political structure in Surulere and Lagos more broadly.

While details of the disagreement were not fully disclosed in the reports, Elliot’s apology indicates an effort to put the dispute behind them and maintain political ties.

Gbajabiamila has not publicly disclosed further details of the matter in the reports reviewed.

The development also highlights the significance of internal relationships and political alliances within Nigeria’s major parties, particularly as politicians prepare for the 2027 elections.
