Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has visited Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to congratulate him on his successful bid to retain the governorship seat after the state’s latest election.

The former President made the visit on Sunday, August 16, 2026, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally announced Adeleke as the winner of the keenly contested governorship poll conducted the previous day.

Adeleke secured another four-year term after defeating his major opponent, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in an election that attracted significant attention across the state.

The governor, who contested under the Accord Party platform, recorded a total of 511,067 votes to emerge ahead of Oyebamiji, who finished with 444,815 votes.

The result placed Adeleke 66,252 votes ahead of his closest rival, giving him a clear advantage in the final tally released by the electoral commission.

INEC announced the outcome after officials completed the collation of results submitted from all 30 local government areas across Osun State.

According to the final figures, Adeleke secured victories in 19 local government areas, while the APC candidate won in 11.

The incumbent governor’s victories were recorded across several parts of the state, including Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East and Ife Central.

Other local government areas where Adeleke emerged victorious included Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo and Osogbo.

The outcome allowed Adeleke to retain control of the state after facing a significant challenge from the opposition APC.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, placed third in the overall contest, trailing the two leading contenders by a considerable margin.

Following the announcement of the results, Adeleke received congratulatory messages from political figures, supporters and other stakeholders who acknowledged his victory.

Obasanjo’s visit was among the notable gestures that followed the declaration of the result.

During the visit, the former Nigerian leader reportedly congratulated Adeleke on securing another term in office and praised the outcome of the electoral process.

The meeting also came at a significant moment for the governor, who had just secured a fresh mandate to continue overseeing the affairs of Osun State for another four years.

Adeleke’s victory represents a continuation of his administration after he successfully defeated the APC candidate in a closely watched contest.

The election had generated considerable interest because of the political competition surrounding the governorship seat and the importance attached to the outcome by the major parties.

The final results showed that while the APC maintained substantial support across several local government areas, Adeleke managed to secure enough votes in key areas to remain ahead of his principal challenger.

Obasanjo’s decision to personally visit the governor shortly after the announcement further underscored the significance of Adeleke’s electoral victory.

The former President’s appearance also added prominence to the celebrations surrounding the governor’s successful re-election.

With the electoral process now concluded and Adeleke having secured another mandate, attention is expected to shift toward governance, policy implementation and the governor’s plans for his second term in office.
