Iraq Launches Major Drive to Register 6 Million Weapons, Closes 71 Fake PMF Offices

Iraq’s Interior Ministry says it has established an information database to register approximately 6 million weapons across the country as the government intensifies efforts to bring firearms under state control.

The ministry announced on Monday that it had also shut down 71 fake offices that allegedly claimed to be affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a state-backed umbrella organisation comprising various armed groups.

The ministry did not immediately disclose where the offices were located or provide details about how the nationwide weapons registration database would operate.

The move follows the opening of firearms registration and licensing offices across Iraq on Friday. The offices are part of a broader government programme designed to ensure that weapons are legally registered and ultimately brought under the authority of the Iraqi state.

Earlier, on June 3, military spokesman Sabah al-Numan announced the creation of a committee responsible for implementing the government’s plan. He said the committee had already begun its work.

Controlling weapons outside the authority of the state remains one of Iraq’s biggest security and political challenges. Several armed factions operate across the country, including groups linked to the PMF as well as other organisations operating independently of the state security structure.

The Iraqi government has increasingly sought to strengthen the authority of its official security institutions and consolidate control over weapons.

Officials say the initiative is part of wider efforts to improve domestic stability and protect Iraq from being drawn further into regional conflicts and tensions.

The success of the programme could have significant implications for Iraq’s security landscape, particularly given the country’s history of armed groups and the continuing tensions across the wider Middle East.

Good breakdown of updated GSA SER target lists. I like that it focuses on quality versus quantity instead of treating every huge scraped URL dump as useful campaign data.
