Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has named prominent African Democratic Congress (ADC) member Kenneth Okonkwo as his new spokesperson, despite the politician and actor recently voicing concerns over the party’s vice-presidential choice for the 2027 presidential race.
Okonkwo made the announcement on Thursday through a statement shared on his verified X account, where he expressed appreciation to Atiku for entrusting him with the responsibility. He described the appointment as a privilege and thanked the former vice president for the confidence shown in his ability to serve in the role.
According to Okonkwo, Atiku’s decision reflects a leadership approach built on openness and constructive engagement. He noted that instead of reacting negatively to differing opinions, the former vice president encourages discussions that promote understanding and practical solutions.
The newly appointed spokesperson explained that his previous reservations about developments within the ADC did not prevent meaningful conversations with Atiku and other senior party figures. He said those discussions focused on issues affecting the South-East and explored ways to safeguard the region’s interests within the framework of the Electoral Act 2026 and prevailing political realities.
Okonkwo stated that the consultations reassured him that the concerns of the South-East had been carefully considered. He maintained that party leaders were committed to ensuring fairness and inclusiveness while navigating legal and political challenges ahead of the next general election.
He also acknowledged the contributions of several key figures who played important roles in strengthening the ADC. Among those he thanked were Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka. Okonkwo praised their efforts in fostering unity and preparing the party for the 2027 electoral contest.
In addition, he expressed gratitude to his family, supporters, friends, and well-wishers for their unwavering encouragement and prayers throughout his political journey. He appealed for continued support, asking for wisdom, courage, protection, and strength as he assumes the demanding responsibility of serving as Atiku’s spokesperson. He added that he remains committed to contributing to the vision of building a more prosperous and united Nigeria.
The appointment comes shortly after Okonkwo openly questioned the ADC’s reported decision regarding its vice-presidential candidate. He had argued that selecting a running mate from the South-South would deepen the political exclusion of the South-East, which he said has not occupied either the presidency or vice presidency since the return to democratic rule in 1999.
Despite those earlier criticisms, subsequent engagements between Okonkwo and the party leadership appear to have resolved major concerns, paving the way for his appointment.
Meanwhile, the ADC has officially chosen former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election. Amaechi’s emergence followed Atiku’s victory as the party’s presidential candidate during its nationwide primary election, setting the stage for the ADC’s campaign ahead of the next general election.
