The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified efforts to settle internal disagreements in Kano State following tensions arising from the party’s ongoing primary election process.
As part of the reconciliation initiative, the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, convened a strategic meeting with prominent figures of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, a political group associated with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The discussion took place on Monday evening and was conducted privately.
Also present at the gathering were senior officials of the NDC at the national level, alongside representatives of the Kwankwasiyya bloc. The meeting was aimed at addressing concerns raised by members of the movement regarding the conduct of the party’s nomination exercises in Kano.
The dispute is believed to stem from differences between the Kwankwasiyya faction and some longstanding party stakeholders in the state. With the party preparing to conclude its candidate selection process, the national leadership considered it necessary to intervene to prevent further divisions and maintain unity among members.
Speaking on the development, NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, explained that the engagement formed part of the party’s broader commitment to fairness, participation, and transparency. He noted that the leadership was working closely with all affected groups to ensure that every voice within the party structure was heard and respected.
According to him, Dickson and other senior party officials are serving as facilitators in the discussions, seeking common ground among the various interests involved. He emphasized that the party remains dedicated to democratic principles and would not allow the nomination process to be dominated by any individual or group.
The spokesperson stressed that the NDC is determined to create an environment where members can freely participate in the selection of candidates. He added that the leadership has no intention of imposing aspirants on members in Kano State or any other part of the country, insisting that the party’s internal processes must reflect the wishes of its grassroots supporters.
Sources familiar with the meeting disclosed that deliberations lasted for several hours, with participants exchanging views on ways to resolve outstanding issues. At the end of the discussions, party leaders expressed confidence that continued dialogue would help strengthen cohesion and restore trust among stakeholders.
The NDC described the consultations as constructive and encouraging, noting that efforts to achieve lasting peace within the Kano chapter would continue in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the party has reacted to reports circulating online claiming that results from its primary elections had already been released in certain states. The leadership firmly rejected the reports, describing them as inaccurate and misleading.
The NDC clarified that no official outcome of any primary election has been announced so far. It therefore urged party members, supporters, and the general public to ignore unofficial lists and documents being shared on social media and other communication channels.
Party officials reiterated that only information released through authorized platforms should be considered authentic, assuring members that the nomination process remains ongoing and that official announcements would be made at the appropriate time.
