Former House of Representatives member Abdulmumin Jibrin has expressed strong confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in office, declaring that the opposition has already lost the political momentum needed to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.
Jibrin made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Wednesday, where he assessed the current political climate and the prospects of major political actors ahead of the next general election. According to him, developments within the opposition camp, coupled with the prevailing political realities across the country, have significantly strengthened Tinubu’s position.
The former lawmaker argued that while opposition parties continue to explore possible alliances and coalition arrangements, such efforts may not be sufficient to challenge the President’s growing political influence. He maintained that the APC remains firmly entrenched in the nation’s political structure and continues to enjoy advantages that could prove decisive in the next election cycle.
Jibrin noted that discussions about a potential opposition coalition have dominated political conversations in recent months, with various stakeholders calling for greater unity among parties seeking to challenge the ruling party. However, he believes that even a united front may struggle to overcome Tinubu’s political strength and the APC’s nationwide reach.
According to him, the opposition’s inability to maintain a common position on key political issues has weakened its chances of presenting a formidable challenge in 2027. He pointed out that divisions among opposition leaders and parties have made it increasingly difficult for them to build the level of cohesion necessary to compete effectively against the ruling party.
The former Kano lawmaker specifically referenced prominent opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, and Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde. He argued that even if the three politicians and their supporters were to rally behind a single presidential candidate or political platform, President Tinubu would still emerge victorious.
Jibrin said the political landscape currently favours the President, adding that his administration continues to consolidate support across different regions of the country. He also suggested that recent political alignments and defections in various states have further strengthened the APC’s position ahead of future elections.
While acknowledging that politics remains dynamic and can change rapidly, Jibrin insisted that the opposition has yet to demonstrate the level of organisation and unity required to pose a serious threat to the ruling party. He argued that the absence of a clear and coordinated strategy has left opposition groups struggling to gain traction among voters.
Speaking on the programme, Jibrin stated that his assessment was based on existing political realities rather than personal preference. According to him, every analysis of the current situation points to a favourable outcome for Tinubu.
“I will say on a general scale, looking at the reality on the ground and all the political dynamics we are witnessing, the opposition has already lost it,” he said.
He added that he had consistently maintained that President Tinubu would defeat the opposition even if they succeeded in forming a united coalition.
“I have always said that even if they come together, the President will still defeat them. Now that they appear divided, his chances are even stronger. I am confident that President Tinubu will win the 2027 election,” Jibrin said.
