The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, is scheduled to meet today following Monday’s judgment by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
The appellate court nullified the party’s national convention held in Ibadan between November 15 and 16, 2025. The court ruled that the PDP acted improperly by proceeding with the convention despite an existing court order restraining the party from holding the exercise until conditions earlier set by the Federal High Court were met.
In a notice announcing the meeting, BoT Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, said it would take place at No. 1 Sabo Ago Street, LifeCamp, Abuja, by 2 p.m. He emphasized that the BoT constituted by the Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) remains the only body recognized by law, in line with the Federal High Court ruling and its affirmation by the Court of Appeal.
Ohuabunwa cautioned party members to disregard any other notice calling for a BoT meeting, insisting that only duly notified trustees would be accredited for the session. He also warned individuals who are not members of the BoT to stay away from the venue.
Meanwhile, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, welcomed the Court of Appeal ruling, describing it as a victory for the rule of law. Wike urged PDP members to set aside personal interests, discontinue ongoing legal battles and embrace reconciliation in order to strengthen the party.
He also warned that pursuing the matter further at the Supreme Court could create more problems for the PDP, particularly as political parties are expected to conduct their primary elections in April and May.
At the same time, the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led faction has intensified preparations for a fresh national convention. Mohammed disclosed this on Monday during an inspection of the Velodrome at the National Stadium in Abuja, which has been selected as the venue for the convention being organised by the caretaker committee.
He called on PDP members to close ranks and work together in the interest of the party. Mohammed reiterated that the National Caretaker Working Committee remains the only national leadership recognised both by the party and by the law.
According to him, the caretaker committee is the legitimate body authorised to present candidates for elections as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections. He therefore urged party leaders, stakeholders and supporters to rally behind the committee as it guides the PDP through the next phase of its political activities.
Mohammed stressed that the recent court ruling reaffirmed the importance of respecting the rule of law in managing the party’s internal affairs. He added that efforts would continue to enlighten party members and supporters about the implications of the Court of Appeal judgment while preparations for the convention proceed.
Also speaking, Secretary of the caretaker committee, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, reassured PDP members interested in contesting the 2027 elections on the party’s platform that they have no reason to worry.
He said concerns had been raised about who would sign nomination forms for aspirants, but explained that the Court of Appeal had affirmed the legitimacy of the caretaker committee.
Anyanwu noted that once the planned convention is held, the party will have a fully constituted National Working Committee. He assured aspirants that there would be no obstacles to their participation in the electoral process.
He added that by April 1, the PDP is expected to have a fully functional National Working Committee in place to oversee the party’s affairs.
