Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Samuel Anyanwu, has dismissed the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, over the weekend, describing it as nothing more than a “jamboree.”
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Anyanwu argued that the convention lacked legitimacy because the party had failed to meet the necessary requirements. He said many states had yet to conduct their congresses, making the convention procedurally flawed.
“Sixteen states had not even done their congresses; the entire South-East has not done theirs. All that happened yesterday [Saturday] was a jamboree,” he said.
Anyanwu added that even the few congresses successfully conducted in some states had not been properly communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before a faction of the party proceeded with the event in Ibadan.
“Even the ones done earlier have not been communicated to INEC,” he noted.
Describing the convention as illegal, he mocked the calls made by some participants urging members to obey party rules.
“When I heard somebody yesterday at the convention, when they were celebrating and having their jamboree, saying that we must obey the rules of the party, I laughed,” he said.
According to reports, the Ibadan convention expelled several PDP chieftains, including Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose, and produced Taminu Turaki as the party’s new National Chairman.
