Death Toll Rises to 40 After Stampede at Political Rally for Actor-Turned-Politician Vijay in Southern India

The death toll from a devastating stampede at a political rally in Tamil Nadu has climbed to 40, including nine children, with over 124 people injured, state authorities confirmed Sunday.

The tragedy occurred Saturday evening in Karur, where tens of thousands had gathered in sweltering heat to attend a campaign rally held by Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, popularly known as Vijay — one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest film stars and now a rising political figure ahead of the 2026 state elections.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian told The Associated Press that 36 people were already dead upon arrival at hospitals, while four others died during treatment. Most of the injured are in stable condition, he added.

Crowd Overwhelms Barricades as Rally Spirals Out of Control

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes at the overcrowded venue. Local resident S. Sabesan, who was present at the rally, said Vijay arrived over six hours late, by which point the crowd had swelled to unmanageable levels.

“A lot of barricades and ropes were placed around the venue,” said Sabesan, a 42-year-old textile businessman. “But the crowd became so large that nobody could control it.”

He added that many fainted during Vijay’s speech due to the heat and exhaustion. The actor-turned-politician reportedly halted his address to call for ambulances.

Another witness, R. Rajendaran, a local lawyer, said the chaos peaked when Vijay threw water bottles from atop his campaign vehicle into the crowd. “When he decided to leave and his vehicle started moving, commotion broke out as hundreds chased the vehicle. That is what led to the stampede,” he said.

Investigation Announced as Political Fallout Grows

Minister Subramanian acknowledged that “there was indiscipline” at the rally and announced that a formal probe has been launched. A retired judge will lead the investigation, with findings expected within a month.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his condolences and announced compensation of ₹1 million (over $11,000 USD) for each victim’s family.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in, calling the tragedy “deeply saddening.”

Vijay Responds with Grief

In an emotional post on X (formerly Twitter), Vijay said:

“My heart is shattered. I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.”

Vijay, who retired from acting in 2024 to form his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has drawn massive support, particularly among youth, tapping into the state’s long-standing tradition of film stars transitioning into political icons. Tamil Nadu has seen similar celebrity-political crossovers with figures like M.G. Ramachandran, Jayalalithaa, and Rajinikanth.

Stampedes: A Recurring Tragedy in India

Stampedes at mass gatherings remain a recurring tragedy in India, often due to poor crowd management and inadequate infrastructure. In January, at least 30 people died during the Maha Kumbh festival, the world’s largest religious gathering, when a crowd surged during a ritual river bath.

As Karur reels from the tragedy, attention now turns to accountability — and whether lessons will be learned before the next major political or religious event puts more lives at risk.
