The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL), stating that the facility remains in good condition despite recent negative media reports.
This assurance was given in a statement released by the Ministry of Steel Development and signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Salamatu Jibaniya.
“The attention of the Federal Ministry of Steel Development has been drawn to recent media reports regarding the future of Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited,” the statement said. “While we acknowledge the concerns raised, the Federal Government remains fully committed to the growth of Nigeria’s steel industry, including the revitalization of ASCL.”
According to the ministry, a thorough technical and financial audit is currently underway to guide future decisions about the plant. This audit aims to ensure transparency and data-driven outcomes that align with national industrial goals.
Referencing a previous technical audit conducted in 2018, the ministry noted that the plant was found to be in generally robust condition, with only normal wear and tear. The report recommended modernizing manual systems to boost operational efficiency.
The ministry expressed confidence that the ongoing audit will offer a solid foundation for strategic action to support Nigeria’s industrial development.
