Governor Mbah Urges Federal Government to Release Nnamdi Kanu

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has renewed calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing his prolonged detention as unjust and emphasizing that securing his freedom would be the right step forward.

Governor Mbah made the appeal on Monday during a question-and-answer session at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference, held in Enugu. His remarks followed a presentation on the theme, “Leadership and Transformation.”

Responding to a participant who commended his efforts and encouraged him to continue advocating for Kanu’s release, Mbah disclosed that the matter was a top priority in his early engagements with the presidency.

“My first visit to the President was about Nnamdi Kanu. I believe that the right thing to do is to release him. Hopefully, that will be done soon,” the governor said.

Kanu is currently standing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges, which he has denied.

Governor Mbah also highlighted his administration’s role in restoring peace and normalcy in Enugu, pointing to the end of the disruptive Monday sit-at-home order, which had been linked to Kanu’s incarceration.

“We met a situation where people were compelled to stay at home every Monday. Now, people trade in Ogbete and other markets in peace on Mondays. Monday sit-at-home has ended in Enugu, as you (lawyers) can see. You can also move around and investigate,” he stated.

The governor further shared insights into his administration’s broader strategies aimed at overcoming developmental challenges and unlocking economic opportunities within the state.
