The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the arrest of former governor and current senator, Aminu Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), labelling it politically motivated.
Tambuwal, who served as Sokoto governor for eight years and was a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was detained on Monday over alleged financial impropriety during his time in office.
In a statement issued early Tuesday by the PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sanyinnawal, the party claimed the arrest was part of a broader strategy by the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government to suppress dissent and weaken opposition voices critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“The so-called investigation is nothing but a rehash of a baseless case that has previously yielded no evidence,” the statement read, describing the move as an attempt to damage Tambuwal’s reputation and pressure him into silence.
The PDP defended Tambuwal’s tenure as being marked by transparency and financial discipline and accused the EFCC of engaging in selective prosecution by overlooking alleged corruption cases involving members of the ruling party.
Urging the public and its supporters to remain calm, the party called for accountability and impartiality from anti-corruption agencies.
“Our confidence in Senator Tambuwal’s integrity remains unshaken despite politically driven investigations,” the statement concluded.
