Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reportedly raided the Green Legacy Hotel, located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State, arresting several youths suspected of involvement in internet fraud.
The operation took place in the early hours of Sunday during a pool party at the hotel.
The incident comes just five days after the EFCC’s Ibadan Zonal Directorate arrested a suspected internet fraudster in possession of two locally-made pistols during a raid at K-Hotel in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State. That operation led to the arrest of 55 suspects.
A viral video from Sunday’s raid at OOPL showed youths fleeing as gunshots rang out. Sources said EFCC operatives, reportedly from the Lagos Directorate, seized over 20 luxury vehicles along with other valuables.
One X (formerly Twitter) user, A. Ayomide, recounted narrowly avoiding the raid:
“Literally left my house past midnight to go to OOPL, got there and the crowd was too much. I don’t like the settings, my guy doesn’t like the settings, so we were just at the car park. Left around 1:30, 20 minutes later I get home and I’m getting calls that EFCC is raiding OOPL.”
The Managing Director of OOPL Ventures, Vitalis Ortese, confirmed the incident but declined to give details. “Yes, they did. There was an incident this morning. We will find out and we will let you know,” he told PUNCH.
When contacted, EFCC Lagos Zonal Command spokesperson Ayo Oyewole said he was not aware of the operation but would make inquiries. EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, also said he would verify and respond.
