The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commended the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, for launching an investigation into staff accused of neglecting a crash victim brought in for emergency treatment.
In a statement by FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed praised the hospital’s management for taking swift action. He stressed the importance of prompt medical care in reducing fatalities and urged hospitals to respond swiftly to emergency cases.
The FRSC condemned the recurring rejection of accident victims by hospitals, noting that the National Road Traffic Regulations (2024) explicitly prohibit such actions and outline penalties for negligence.
“We call on all medical institutions to prioritize the lives of accident victims and adhere to the highest standards of care,” said Mohammed.
He also commended a Good Samaritan who rescued the victim and brought him to the hospital, urging Nigerians to emulate such patriotic actions.
According to FMC Abuja, eight staff members—four doctors, two nurses, and two attendants—are under investigation for alleged dereliction of duty. The hospital’s Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, confirmed that the victim seen in a viral video with a head injury had been treated and discharged on the same day.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to collaborate with healthcare providers to improve emergency response and reduce road crash fatalities.
