Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has drawn sharp criticism from multiple opposition parties following his open declaration to lead President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.
During a media chat in Abuja, Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisted he remains loyal to the PDP but described himself as an “asset” to Tinubu’s political success. “Whether you like it or not, I am an asset. I will ensure Tinubu wins in 2027,” Wike declared.
He defended his decision not to support the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, citing a lack of equity in the party’s internal politics. “The presidency should have gone to the South. You can’t have both the presidential candidate and the national chairman from the North,” he said.
Despite the backlash, APC spokesperson Bala Ibrahim defended Wike, saying he is within his democratic rights to support the president. “He’s the FCT Minister and part of the administration. Supporting the President is logical,” Ibrahim stated.
Former Wike Adviser Opunabo Inko-Tariah and Rivers APC Chairman Emeka Beke also took jabs at the minister, particularly over his criticism of ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi.
While Prof. Wale Oladipo, a former PDP National Secretary, refrained from condemning Wike, he noted the complexity of his dual role, acknowledging internal party contradictions that have occurred in the past.
Controversially, PDP grapples with internal divisions and prepares for the 2027 elections. Calls for party discipline continue to mount as members urge the leadership to enforce its rules against disloyalty.
