As President Bola Tinubu’s administration marks its second year in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to support ongoing reforms and avoid allowing political distractions to derail progress. In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari congratulated Tinubu on reaching the midterm milestone and advised citizens to manage their expectations, stressing that meaningful change takes time.
“Reforms take time to yield results,” Buhari said. “They should not be undermined by nettlesome domestic politics.”
Acknowledging the economic hardships many Nigerians are facing, especially the most vulnerable, Buhari emphasized that tackling poverty and inflation cannot be the responsibility of government alone. He called for collective effort, urging both the private sector and citizens to contribute actively to national development.
Since taking office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu has rolled out a series of bold reforms under his “Renewed Hope Agenda,” including the removal of fuel subsidies, the liberalization of the naira, and the full repayment of a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan. However, these moves have also triggered a significant cost-of-living crisis, drawing public criticism.
Despite this, Buhari expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and commended his determination to push through with difficult but necessary changes. He also extended his best wishes to the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which recently endorsed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to President Tinubu on his two years in office,” Buhari said. “May you continue to lead with wisdom and care.”
Buhari concluded his message by encouraging Nigerians to remain hopeful, urging patience as the government works toward economic stability and long-term growth.
