On Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the launch of Air Algérie’s direct flight service from Algiers to Abuja, beginning on April 6, 2025. This initiative is designed to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Algeria.

A statement from the ministry, signed by acting spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that the new route, resulting from the Bilateral Air Services Agreement, will be operated by Air Algérie using a Boeing 737. The service is expected to enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and encourage trade and investment between the two nations.

It demonstrates the shared commitment of both countries to improving cooperation in aviation, commerce, and cultural exchanges. The statement partially reads, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce the commencement of Air Algérie’s inaugural direct flight service from Algiers to Abuja, scheduled for April 6, 2025. This historic development highlights the growing diplomatic and economic relationship between Nigeria and Algeria.

It is important to note that this successful venture is the result of the implementation of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between the two countries.

The ministry also acknowledged the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers for its vital contribution in making the flight possible. The inaugural flight is expected to carry the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers, Nigerian community leaders, and Algerian government representatives. The Federal Government has congratulated Air Algérie and expressed its full support to ensure the success of the new service. With affordable fares and Algeria’s close proximity to Europe, the flight provides Nigerians with an accessible gateway to Europe, reinforcing Nigeria’s role as a regional hub for business, tourism, and transit.

The statement continued, The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant aviation authorities, extends its heartfelt congratulations to Air Algérie and assures full support to guarantee the success and long-term viability of this new service. We are confident that this initiative will further strengthen the enduring friendship between Nigeria and Algeria while creating new opportunities for shared growth.
