Two lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives. Husseini Jallo, representing Igabi Federal Constituency, Kaduna State, and Adamu Tanko, representing Suleja/Tara/Gurara Federal Constituency, Niger State, cited the “perennial crisis” in the PDP as their reason for leaving.
Jallo stated that the lingering instability in the opposition party had hindered his ability to serve his constituents effectively. He also praised the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, for his leadership style and expressed his belief in the principle of national unity.
Similarly, Tanko said his decision to defect was made after consulting with stakeholders in his constituency. This development comes after another PDP lawmaker from Kaduna, Amos Magaji, defected to the APC.
The Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, and Deputy Minority Leader, Ali Isa, have criticized the defections, citing a Supreme Court judgment that requires lawmakers to completely defect from their parties. They argued that the defecting members should resign and face fresh elections.
This latest development may alter the balance of power in the National Assembly, as the APC continues to gain momentum ahead of the next electoral cycle.
