Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Onyia, has passed away at the age of 73. His family confirmed the news on Tuesday, announcing that he died on Monday, March 10, 2025, following a brief illness.

In a statement, the family expressed deep sorrow, stating, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hon. Chief Dubem Onyia, a distinguished statesman and former Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He passed away surrounded by his family and loved ones after a brief illness.”

The statement described Onyia as a man of great integrity who dedicated his life to God and public service, leaving a lasting impact on Nigeria’s diplomatic landscape, both at home and abroad. It emphasized his commitment to national interests during his tenure as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Onyia’s legacy extends beyond government service. He was a devoted husband, father, and mentor to many, admired for his wisdom, generosity, and dedication to improving lives. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, and many relatives, friends, and political allies. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, expressed his grief over Onyia’s death, describing it as a monumental loss to both the state and the nation. In a statement, Mbah praised Onyia as a distinguished leader, diplomat, and patriot who dedicated his life to public service on local, national, and international levels.

“Ndi Enugu received with deep grief the passing of Chief Dubem Gideon Onyia, aged 73,” Mbah said. “He was a fine diplomat, public servant, intellectual, and patriot, who contributed immensely to the service of his community, Enugu State, and Nigeria.”

Onyia, a former House of Representatives member, served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2003 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. His career also included significant roles such as Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Joint Commission, Chairman of the São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Boundary Commission, and Chairman of the International Technical Commission for the National Boundary Commission. He played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s constitutional and political development as a member of the 1988/1998 Constituent Assembly and as Secretary General of the Eastern Mandate Union and National Secretary of the Peoples Consensus Party.

Governor Mbah added, “He was a fine gentleman, philanthropist, promoter of peace, justice, and equity, and a colossus in all respects. His selfless service and wealth of experience will be deeply missed.”

Onyia was also a trustee of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation. Born on February 23, 1952, in Enugu, he received his early education in Nigeria before pursuing higher studies in the United Kingdom. His career spanned roles in public service, corporate leadership, and philanthropy.
