Abia State Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare, describing it as a cornerstone of his agenda. Speaking on Sunday while welcoming a Belgian medical delegation, the Revive Medical Team, for their second medical mission in the state, Otti commended their contributions to improving healthcare delivery in Abia.
He expressed gratitude to the team for fulfilling their promise to return for another round of free medical services, adding that reports from their previous mission were overwhelmingly positive.
“I want to let you know that healthcare delivery is topmost on our agenda. We have driven the healthcare delivery system in Abia from where it was when we came in 2023 to the present level. We are not there yet; there is still a lot of room for improvement,” Otti said.
The governor also announced plans to launch the reconstruction of 200 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state. He emphasized that the project, designed to deliver the PHCs within 100 days, is part of a broader effort to rehabilitate all 948 PHCs in Abia.
“We took our time to design a prototype of a Primary Healthcare Centre in Abia State. So, when you walk into one, you will know it is a primary healthcare centre in Abia State. By the time we are done with the first set of 200, we will flag off another 200 until all the centres are fully rehabilitated,” he assured.
The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya, described the medical mission as aligned with the governor’s vision to provide free and quality healthcare to residents. He revealed that the team would perform at least 100 surgeries and conduct 1,000 consultations on various health issues during their visit.
“The mission is one of the governor’s many interventions in the health sector,” Ogbonnaya said, adding that the Abia State University Teaching Hospital is also undergoing significant retrofitting to improve its services.
The leader of the Revive Medical Team, Dr. De Gazelle Herman, alongside team member Dr. Smart Oriaku, highlighted their commitment to supporting Governor Otti’s healthcare initiatives. They noted that their efforts will include surgeries for conditions like goiter and hernia, as well as extensive medical consultations.
This visit follows the success of their first mission, where thousands of Abians received free medical care.
Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s determination to transform healthcare delivery in the state, promising that no community would be left behind.
