Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has reiterated his administration’s commitment to clearing the state’s outstanding gratuity backlog, which currently stands at ₦19 billion. This pledge was made during a cheque presentation ceremony to retirees in Gombe on Monday.

Governor Yahaya disclosed that his administration inherited over ₦21 billion in unpaid gratuities when he assumed office in 2019. Since then, he has disbursed approximately ₦17.2 billion to retirees. However, due to ongoing retirements, the backlog has persisted, totaling ₦19 billion for state and local government retirees.

Speaking at the event, Yahaya emphasized his determination to address the issue, stating, “We are deeply committed to ensuring that no retiree is left without their entitlements. It is our solemn promise to clear all outstanding gratuities before the end of our tenure in 2027.”

The governor also highlighted his administration’s proactive steps to improve the welfare of civil servants and pensioners in the state. This includes the recent implementation of a ₦70,000 minimum wage for state employees, aimed at cushioning the effects of economic challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.

Yahaya praised the cooperation of labor unions, retiree associations, and other stakeholders who have consistently supported his administration’s policies. He noted that constructive dialogue and collaboration have been vital in addressing the state’s financial challenges while ensuring civil servants’ welfare remains a top priority.

Retirees at the event expressed appreciation for the payments made so far and called on the government to sustain its efforts in resolving all pending gratuities.

The Yahaya administration has positioned itself as one focused on accountability and civil servant welfare, earning commendation for its gradual but steady approach to addressing inherited financial obligations.

With this renewed commitment, retirees and their families are hopeful that the backlog will indeed be cleared by 2027, marking a significant milestone for the state’s financial administration.
