A yet-to-be-identified male adult suspected of theft was left critically injured after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State on Friday, November 8, 2024.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had broken into an apartment in the community’s densely populated neighborhood early Friday morning, prompting residents to chase him. In an attempt to escape, the suspect ran onto the busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and was struck by a speeding vehicle.
PUNCH Metro visited the scene on Sunday and found the suspect lying unconscious on the roadside, near the Abule Egba bridge, with swollen eyes, a bruised body, and visible injuries.
Ganiyat Enitan, a trader who owns a shop close to the bridge, told PUNCH Metro, “We met him there on Friday morning, and he’s been there since then. He was caught scaling a fence at midnight, and those who saw him decided to chase him. We’re surprised he’s still alive.”
Another eyewitness, Sesan, added, “He was initially lying on the bridge walkway before he rolled into the main road. We’ve been warning pedestrians to be careful around him.”
Concerned citizens are urging the Lagos State Government to evacuate the suspect from the scene to prevent further harm.
Saheed Adekunle, a transport worker, said, “We want the state government to remove him from here. If he spends more time on the road, he’ll likely be crushed by a vehicle. The tyre LASTMA put there is not enough to stop that.”
We hope that the government will take the suspected culprit out of the road; it is obvious that he’s been hurt and can’t carry himself out of the place for days.
