The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has penalized Libya, granting Nigeria three points and three goals for the recently abandoned match against Libya. This update came through a statement issued by CAF Disciplinary Board Chairperson, Ousmane Kanethe, on Saturday.
Nigeria withdrew from the fixture after subpar treatment left Super Eagles players and staff stranded at an unstaffed airport for nearly 24 hours.
Additionally, the Libya Football Federation has been fined $50,000, which must be settled within 60 days of receiving the decision. This penalty emphasizes CAF’s commitment to upholding discipline and fairness across the tournament.
In its ruling, CAF determined that the Libya Football Federation violated Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations, along with Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
The five-part decision states: “The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
“The match No.87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled for October 15, 2024, in Benghazi) is declared forfeited by Libya, resulting in a 3-0 score in favor of Nigeria.
“The Libya Football Federation is instructed to pay a fine of USD 50,000, to be settled within 60 days of receiving this decision.
“All additional motions or requests for relief are dismissed.”
Following this decision, Nigeria now holds 10 points from four games.
