A dispute between two relatives in Lagos took a tragic turn on Monday when one fatally stabbed his cousin during a physical altercation.
The Lagos State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in a brief statement, adding that the suspect remains at large.
According to the police, a woman reported that her son, Ganiyu Ibrahim, and her nephew, Afeez Akeem, had a disagreement that escalated into a physical confrontation.
The altercation occurred around 7 a.m., with Ganiyu allegedly engaging in a heated argument with Afeez, which turned violent.
“During the fight, Ganiyu broke a bottle and stabbed Afeez in the chest. Afeez was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor. Detectives were quickly dispatched to the scene and documented evidence,” Hundeyin said.
The family, however, declined an autopsy, opting to bury Afeez in accordance with Islamic rites.
“The suspect is still at large. An investigation is ongoing, and efforts are underway to capture the fleeing suspect,” the police spokesperson added.
In an earlier incident in October, the police arrested 25-year-old Chibunma Chimelie for allegedly stabbing his 68-year-old father to death in Lagos. This incident, reported by the suspect’s brother, took place around 10 p.m. in the Isolo area of the state.
