The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested Nura Mas’ud, a 26-year-old resident of Mu’azu village in Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area, for allegedly setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire.
According to PUNCH Metro, Mas’ud, who is reportedly mentally unstable, had been receiving treatment at the Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.
Mrs. Muhammad had repeatedly expressed concern about Mas’ud’s physical appearance and mental health status, often inquiring about his well-being. Mas’ud, however, felt his grandmother’s concerns were intrusive and warned her to stop. Despite his warnings, Mrs. Muhammad continued to ask about his health.
In a confessional audio clip, Mas’ud stated, “She frequently asked about my health, and I asked her what was happening to me, but she kept mum. That was what informed my decision to pour petrol on her. I was fed up with her endless inquiries.”
Police Spokesman Shiisu Lawan Adam confirmed the incident, revealing that preliminary investigations showed Mas’ud’s mental instability contributed to his actions.
“Mas’ud went to his family house with a petrol canister and poured it on his grandmother, setting her ablaze,” Lawan said. “The victim died while receiving treatment at a hospital. The suspect voluntarily confessed to committing the offense due to the victim’s repeated inquiries about his life.”
Lawan emphasized, “A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is suffering from mental illness and has been receiving treatment at the Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital. We are working to determine the extent of his mental instability and its role in this tragic incident.”
The police have taken Mas’ud into custody, and further investigations are underway.
