President Bola Tinubu arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday to commiserate with victims of the devastating flood that has claimed at least 30 lives and displaced over 400,000 people.
During his visit, Tinubu toured an emergency camp and reassured displaced persons that his administration would provide support. “I want to assure you that we are going to support you, we will support you. God bless you,” he said.
The president’s visit came after his recent trip to China and a brief stay in the United Kingdom. He was received by top officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Minister of Agriculture Abubakar Kyari.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that the flood has affected around 40% of the city, with over 414,000 people displaced. The UN refugee agency in Nigeria described the flooding as the worst to hit Maiduguri in 30 years.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum noted that the exact number of casualties is still unknown due to inaccessible areas, but rescue efforts are ongoing. Zulum highlighted the long-standing neglect of the dam, which has been a major challenge, and pledged to address the issue.
In a condolence register at the Shehu of Borno’s palace, Tinubu wrote: “My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods in this catastrophe. I stand with the resilient people of Borno and assure you of the continuous support of the Federal Government in providing support and relief as we work together to rebuild lives and restore hope.”
The federal government’s commitment to providing support and relief to affected communities was reaffirmed by Tinubu’s visit.
