The Lagos Mass Transit Red Line Rail will initiate limited services today (Wednesday). This was disclosed by Kolawole Ojelabi, the spokesperson for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Initially, the trains will provide complimentary rides and will run four trips daily between Oyingbo and Agbado. As part of Lagos’s Strategic Transport Master Plan, the Red Line is one of six rail lines, along with a monorail, that have been proposed to improve the city’s transit system.
This rail line is also designed to connect Lagos with Ogun State, recognizing that a significant number of workers and business owners in Lagos reside in Ogun.
Ojelabi emphasized that this achievement is the result of meticulous planning, the training of technical and operational teams, and the installation of robust security measures. A six-week trial run was successfully conducted without passengers to ensure the system’s safety, reliability, and overall efficiency.
“Beginning Wednesday, August 28, the Red Line will engage with organized groups of non-paying passengers to gather their feedback before launching commercial services.
This limited operation is similar to the approach taken during the Blue Line’s testing phase and marks a crucial step in the Lagos State Government’s efforts to develop a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation system.
The first phase of the Red Line, covering a 27-kilometer stretch from Agbado to Oyingbo, will provide commuters with a reliable and affordable transportation option, helping to alleviate traffic congestion and improve the quality of life for Lagos residents,” Ojelabi stated.
