The Federal Government has denied approving a national schools competition and debate on the topic “Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legalised in Nigeria.”
A letter circulating on social media claimed the Federal Ministry of Education had sanctioned the event.
The Ministry of Education has categorically denied any involvement, with Permanent Secretary Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo stating that the letter is “fraudulent and fake” and does not reflect the government’s stance on same-sex marriage. The Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act of 2014 reinforces Nigeria’s strong opposition to legalizing same-sex marriage.
The ministry considers the letter as an attempt to spread misinformation and has reported the matter to security agencies. The public has been advised to disregard the letter and its planned program.
This denial reaffirms the government’s commitment to upholding Nigerian values and laws regarding same-sex marriage.
