The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reported significant progress through Operation Delta Safe, having neutralized over 70 illicit refining operations and disabled 80 overhead tanks within the past three months.
This update was shared by Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff, during a recent meeting with Maj. Gen. Jamil Sarham (retd.), the National Coordinator of Messrs New Guard Security and Consulting Limited, at the NAF headquarters in Abuja. The details were released in a statement by AVM Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information.
Air Marshal Abubakar addressed the serious consequences of oil theft and pipeline vandalism, which have led to a notable decrease in crude oil output and considerable financial losses for the nation.
He also underscored the environmental damage inflicted by these illicit activities, including air pollution, contamination of waterways, and negative impacts on marine and agricultural ecosystems.
In response, the armed forces have been directed to eliminate these threats in the Niger Delta region to enhance oil production. Over the last year, the NAF has carried out 463 flights totaling 560 hours and utilized 175,000 liters of Jet A-1 fuel in their operations.
Recent additions to their equipment have expanded their operational capacity, allowing for better coordination with other security agencies to tackle criminal activities more effectively.
The Chief of Air Staff commended the visiting team for their distinguished military experience and expressed hope that their partnership would strengthen efforts against oil theft.
He noted that the meeting marked a pivotal moment for advancing the protection of Nigeria’s oil infrastructure and addressing the associated economic and environmental challenges.
