Juventus has appointed Thiago Motta as their new head coach, succeeding Massimiliano Allegri, who was dismissed last month. The Italian club announced that Motta has signed a contract running until June 30, 2027. At 41, Motta moves from Serie A rivals Bologna, where he had built a solid reputation since joining in 2022. He expressed his excitement about leading such a prestigious club and is set to earn an annual salary of 3.5 million euros ($3.8 million), according to Italian media.
Motta’s coaching career gained significant attention at Bologna, where he led the team to a fifth-place finish in Serie A last season, securing their first-ever qualification for the Champions League. As a player, Motta was part of the Italian national team that finished as runners-up in the 2012 European Championship. He also won five French championships with PSG and was a member of the Champions League-winning teams at Barcelona and Inter Milan.
This role at Juventus marks Motta’s fourth managerial position after previous stints at Genoa, La Spezia, and Bologna. His brief tenure at Genoa in 2019 was marked by only one win in ten matches, leading to his dismissal after three months.
Juventus ended the last season in third place in Serie A, 23 points behind champions Inter Milan, but managed to clinch their 15th Italian Cup title. Allegri’s sacking was attributed to his inappropriate behavior during the Cup final, leading to an investigation by the Italian Football Federation’s disciplinary authorities. Allegri’s two spells with Juventus saw him win 12 trophies, including five Serie A titles, and reach two Champions League finals.
