One Zachariyya Muhammad has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) Gombe Zonal for misusing Nigerian cash in Gombe State.
In a statement released on X.com on Wednesday, the EFCC said that Muhammad was shown a video during his detention in which he was dancing and spray-painting N200 notes.
He allegedly acknowledged that he was the individual in the footage.
The statement partly read, “Muhammad was arrested on Saturday, May 25, 2024, based on intelligence linking him with the alleged spraying of Naira notes at G-Connect in Tunfure, Gombe State.
“Upon his arrest, he was shown a video where he was dancing and spraying Naira notes in N200 denomination. He admitted to being the one in the video.”
The EFCC further stated that following the conclusion of their investigation, Muhammad will face legal charges.
Given that mishandling and spraying banknotes are crimes in Nigeria, the EFCC has been cracking down on the abuse of the naira. This arrest coincides with their ongoing campaign.
According to PUNCH Online, on Wednesday of last week, the EFCC detained a woman named Janty Emmanuel after receiving information that she had been seen spray-painting Naira notes during a social gathering. She later admitted to the act.
Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, better known by his stage name Bobrisky, was found guilty of misusing the naira and sentenced to six months in prison without the possibility of a fine by the Federal High Court in Lagos State in April 2024.
