A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday morning when seven individuals, purportedly some of them students of Niger Delta University, Yenagoa, were discovered dead inside a music studio, likely due to inhalation of generator fumes. The music studio, situated on Transformer Road in the Amarata area of Yenagoa, reportedly belonged to one of the deceased, identified as Akpos Barakubo.
According to reports, the victims had been working in the studio on Monday night and fell asleep due to exhaustion without turning off the generator, leading to the fatal outcome. In the morning, six bodies were found at the scene, while a seventh person, who was unconscious, was rushed to the hospital but later passed away.
Authorities have cordoned off the area, and the bodies have been transported to the mortuary. A local resident, Damion Asamonye, criticized both the federal and state governments, as well as the Port Harcourt Power Electricity Distribution Company, citing inadequate power supply as a contributing factor to the tragedy.
Asamonye expressed frustration with the unreliable power supply in Bayelsa State, emphasizing the risks it poses to residents. Another resident, Joy Reuben, urged the state government to address the issue of power supply to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Efforts to obtain a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Musa Muhammed, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
