The Osun State House of Assembly is set to submit a bill to Governor Ademola Adeleke aimed at increasing the salaries of specific political office holders. Speaker Adewale Egbedun announced this development during a plenary session on Monday. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the bill, titled ‘Osun State Public/Political Office Holders Reviewed Remuneration Package (Amendment No. 2) Bill 2024,’ was introduced on April 30, 2024.

Kofoworola Adewunmi, the Majority Leader and representative of Ede North State Constituency, presented the bill. He noted that the last salary review for public and political office holders in Osun State was conducted in 2007. Adewunmi emphasized that the salaries stipulated in the 2007 law no longer align with current economic conditions.

Adewunmi argued that due to the significant economic changes over the past 17 years, it is essential to adjust the salaries to improve the living standards of certain office holders, in line with Governor Adeleke’s five-point agenda. He also mentioned that a resolution passed by the State Assembly on May 8, 2008, which included a salary review for some office holders not covered by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission, has been incorporated into this bill. He clarified that lawmakers’ salaries are not affected by this bill as they are reviewed by the National Assembly.
