One of the two Binance executives detained in Nigeria for alleged tax evasion and other offences, NadeemAnjarwalla, has escaped from custody, as gathered by Premium Times.
The Federal Government in February detained the two Binance moguls.
What appears to be a conundrum as yet is how the escapee boarded an international flight despite having his British passport in the custody of the Nigerian authorities.
The culprit who shares dual citizenship – British and Kenyan – is believed to have flown from Abuja on a Middle East airliner, in the event of being led to mosque on Friday, 22 March, 2024.
Report has it that efforts are made to by the authorities to discover his intended his destination and move him back to custody.
One of the sources, an Immigration official, said the Binance executive fled on a Kenyan passport, even though the latter was in possession of only a British passport when he was taken to custody.
Another source observed that Mr Anjarwalla mighthave taken advantage of the “pleasant guest house” and other liberties afforded them, including the use of phone, to stage his escape.
Zakari Mijinyawa, the Head of Strategic Communication at the Office of the National Security Adviser, could not confirm the incident when approached on Sunday night, promising to enquire and revert.
Interestingly, Mr Mijinyawa has reached out with a report: “ The personnel responsible for the custody of the suspect have been arrested , and a thorough investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances that led to his escape from lawful detention, “ the statement captures.
