The Nigeria Super Eagles have begun their final preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with ten players already reporting to the team’s training camp in Cairo. The phased arrival of the squad marks the start of a focused build-up ahead of the tournament, which is set to kick off in Morocco on December 21.
‎
‎Goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was the first to arrive, touching down in Cairo in the early hours of Sunday, signalling his determination to reclaim a starting spot following his recall to the national team. Uzoho’s arrival set the tone for other players to join the camp, highlighting the squad’s readiness and commitment ahead of the continental tournament.
‎
‎Following Uzoho, veteran goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali joined the camp, alongside midfielders Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro. Defenders Semi Ajayi and Amas Obasogie, and attackers Ademola Lookman and Bright Osayi-Samuel, also reported, completing the initial batch of ten players. Midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi was the final early arrival, ensuring the squad begins its preparations with a solid core.
‎
‎The team is scheduled to hold its first official training session later on Sunday, giving the coaching staff a chance to assess players’ fitness levels and integrate new tactical plans. A key friendly against Egypt is slated for Tuesday, December 16, at the Cairo International Stadium. This match will serve as a critical warm-up before the Super Eagles depart for Morocco for the tournament’s group stage.
‎
‎The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has emphasized that additional players will join the camp as European clubs release their stars. This phased arrival strategy is intended to balance club commitments with national team priorities, ensuring that the squad remains fresh and injury-free ahead of the competition.
‎
‎Nigeria enters AFCON 2025 with high expectations, aiming to add a fourth continental title to its record. The Super Eagles have previously won the tournament in 1980, 1994, and 2013, and a strong showing in Morocco will reinforce their reputation as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
‎
‎Coach Eric Sékou Chelle has named a 28-man squad for the tournament after narrowing down from a larger provisional list. The selection generated discussion among fans, with the recall of Uzoho and striker Paul Onuachu drawing attention, while the omission of goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and forward Arokodare sparked debate. Chelle has maintained that the selections were made with tactical balance and team cohesion in mind.
‎
‎Speaking on his return, Uzoho said he was “ready to represent Nigeria” and emphasized the importance of unity within the squad. He also dismissed rumors of rivalry with fellow goalkeeper Nwabali, insisting that healthy competition will only strengthen the team’s overall performance.
‎
‎Despite the optimism, injuries remain a concern, with Chelle already forced to make adjustments in the squad. The team’s medical and coaching staff are working closely to manage fitness and recovery, ensuring all players reach peak condition before the tournament begins.
‎
‎As the Super Eagles continue their training in Cairo, attention will soon turn to their departure for Morocco, where they will be based for the group stage. The team’s early momentum, combined with tactical discipline and squad harmony, will be crucial as they aim to reclaim Africa’s most prestigious football title.
‎
‎With AFCON 2025 fast approaching, fans and football analysts alike are keeping a close watch on the Super Eagles’ preparation, eagerly anticipating how the blend of experienced stars and emerging talents will perform on the continental stage.
