A woman in Enugu State has been arrested for breaking her three-year-old stepson’s leg with a pestle.  Ada Ogbogu broke her stepson’s leg at her residence in Sunrise Estate on October 23rd, 2024.

According to eyewitnesses, the three-year-old boy suffered serious injuries, and the incident was reported to the authorities by a neighbor who witnessed the abuse. The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, responded to the incident and ensured that the suspect was arrested.

The suspect, Ada Ogbogu has been charged under Section 288(a) of the Enugu Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004, which carries a punishment of life imprisonment if convicted. The case has been adjourned to November 26, 2024, awaiting the report from the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Ministry of Justice.

During the hearing, the prosecution stated that Ada Ogbogu intentionally poured hot water on her stepson’s nose and mouth and hit him with a pestle, which dislocated his left leg.

This incident shows the need for increased awareness and action against child abuse in Nigeria. The Enugu State Government has ensured to  demonstrate its commitment to protecting children’s rights, with Governor Peter Mbah promising to tackle child abuse cases.
