Nigerians Outraged as Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Allegedly Assaults Abuja Bolt Driver

A viral video has sparked widespread condemnation after allegedly showing House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh berating and assaulting a Bolt driver in Abuja. The driver had arrived at Ikwechegh’s Maitama residence to deliver a package.

In the footage, Ikwechegh reportedly threatened the driver and used derogatory language after the driver requested he come outside to collect the delivery. Ikwechegh said:

“Do you know who I am? I can make this man disappear from the whole of Nigeria, and nothing will happen. Can you imagine this rat? I am not going to give this boy one naira of my money.”

“I will tie you up, lie you down, and put you in my generator house. Do you know where you are? Look at this monkey.”

“This is an embarrassment to the National Assembly, lawmakers should uphold the law, not break it,“ said Dr. Abubakar Umar, a political analyst.

“The driver’s composure in the face of aggression is commendable, this incident underscores the importance of emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills,“ added Dr. Fatima Hassan, a psychologist.

Social media users expressed shock and disappointment at the lawmaker’s conduct, calling for justice and his arrest.

@OsinachiNuel: “Nigerian politicians are notorious for unruly behavior at home, abusing power and treating citizens without respect. But once they step outside the country, they suddenly become humble and compliant, realizing they’re now in a system where laws work and actions have real consequences”

@ibirogba2000: “Most of the people that are always critical of President are worse than people in government. Many people act sanctimonious while out of government. Give them small power and they will turn to be a demigod and worse. I will not let anyone bully me.”

@ndidi_patricia: “Justice must be served. Alex is a tyrant and needs to be fired. Their slogan is always, ‘Do you know who I be?’ Lo, nonsense.”

@OlisaNwosu: “The driver’s calmness amidst provocation is a superpower. This lawmaker’s behavior is appalling.”

“This is a clear case of abuse of power,” said Lagos resident Taiwo Oyedele. “He should face the consequences.”

“Lawmakers should set an example, not bully citizens,” added by an Abuja resident.

“The National Assembly must take decisive action against Ikwechegh, this behavior cannot be tolerated.” This was said by an anonymous user.

Alex Ikwechegh represents Aba North & South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
